My favorite place to stay...

Liked: I like the casual style of the hotel. It is laid back and easy going. It has a very home away from home feel to it which I like much more than a "I'm staying in a hotel" vibe. This was not my first stay. When I needed a room in Hilo, I was glad they had a vacancy in my favorite room- the suite.
Disliked: It would be nice if the water got hot faster, but that is hardly a deal killer. The staff tell you to expect it and advise you to start running the shower early and give it time. No big deal.

Great staff, great location, great...

Liked: The manager was the sweetest person ever. She was always really nice and helpful! I loved staying here because the garden was so beautiful, the room was so spacious, the breakfast was really fresh, and the location was the most convenient. It was a little rough that the water took a while to heat up, but it wasn't a deal breaker. I think the fact that this hotel was easy to get to on the bus and by car eclipsed that. You're literally in the best part of town, so don't sleep on this place. All the places my friends said to go to were so close by - Ken's House of Pancakes, Two Ladies Kitchen, Kuhio Grille, King Kamehameha Statue, Queen Lili'uokalani Garden, and so on.
Disliked: The wait for the water is a bit long, so you may have to have it running for a while before hopping in. I recommend taking your bath at night and just washing up in the morning to overcome this. I was going to take the shower in the lobby but the lock didn't line up well so I skipped it.

If you just want to...

Liked: Excellent, super-helpful staff. Good location and easy to find (with Google maps). Great price but the lowest room listed was only for females and the site didn't mention this. I was up charged $45 upon arrival. Maybe this should have been under "things I didn't like".
Disliked: Room 12 should be condemned! Ceiling fan doesn't work. Ceiling light doesn't work. Safety latch on the door is broken. Electric key didn't work (had to use a code so why have the junk key?) The shower is actually dangerous. To get in you have to step through a doorway that reminded me of WW 2 submarine movies. The floor is angled heavily toward the drain more than ti should be and had the doorway been wider I would have fallen to the floor when I slipped. I had to let the water run for 15+ minutes to get it Luke warm at best. Stay in any of them at your own risk. Extra charge for a TV and garbage channels. The disinfectant they use in the refrigerators actually ruined my food. Inedible the next morning. $7 for half a gallon of milk and I had to dump it.

Bad

Liked: The location was walking distance to downtown
Disliked: The water in the rooms was not potable. The plug in fans in the room did not work and were dirty. It was not possible to turn the overhead light off without also turning off the ceiling fan. The towels were old, thin and ragged. The sheets were thin and didn't fit the beds properly (kept coming off when rolling over).
