Liked: The staff were friendly and the breakfast was decent.
Disliked: The dinner was disappointing - was expecting something a little more from the hotel somehow - pretty tasteless food and the cheesecake was slightly stale.

Overall very disappointed
Liked: Central locationStaff were pleasant and helpful
Disliked: Our room was dirty dusty, the bathroom had a number of slaters found(insects). The emergency exit was clear and functional however the inside corridor area was filthy cobwebs, spiders and bugs. Rear door emergency exit intercom not functional which is inconvenient when walking a dog, entering or exiting.

We would recommend this beautiful...
Liked: We loved pretty much everything about this hotel. The hotel is 'Olde Worlde', which we loved. The decor is beautiful, with ceilings like those out of stately homes. The furnishings are quirky as are the tables, chairs and seating. The hotel reserve tables and seating areas we noticed for larger groups of people who wanted to sit together and for those people who were having afternoon tea.The reception, lounge areas and restaurant and our bedroom were very comfortable and spacious. If we had taken notice of an odd review from others that had not rated this hotel well, then we would have missed a hidden gem. The view from our bedroom was lovely. The staff were welcoming and the politest we've ever known. They all knew their jobs very well and the training that one young staff member was getting from her manager was brilliant. It was very clear why the staff were all very good. The food (breakfast and dinner) was exceptional, superb quality, well presented, good portion size. The relaxing areas for drinks, afternoon tea if you wanted or food were good. However, they had a 'pub' type bar area, which we had differences of opinion on... husband loved the basic pub, wife preferred the lounge areas! So we spent time in both during our 4 day stay. The Tontine is situated in the middle of Peebles. Perfect Location for us.There are shops, bars, pubs and restaurants all around and plenty of touristy things to see and do.There is a car park to the rear of the hotel and we had no problem finding parking. On one day that we travelled outside of Peebles and came back late, there had been a wedding and so the car park was full, but there was still plenty of free parking on the street. We travelled by car (20 minutes) to Straiten and then got the free 'park and ride' bus to Edinburgh (20 minutes). A great service. You can go to Edinburgh from Peebles but the total journey may be up to 2 hours.
Disliked: There really was nothing that we 'didn't like'. However, as this is a review site, what we would note for any one coming to this beautiful hotel is that there is no lift, and there are quirky corridors with small drops or rises of 4 or 5 stairs that lead to our room. This may put some people off, especially if you have mobility issues but we had no problem with this. The bathroom was a bit dated, but as this is an 'Olde Worlde' hotel, this would not put us off either. The shower was over the bath and although the water was not from a 'power shower', it was easy to control the temperature before you got in and we definitely didn't flood the bathroom floor. The water pressure was good enough. If you open the sash window at night, (two were the old wooden sash windows to the front of the building and a new UPVC to the Rear of the building), then they did rattle a bit, so we found that opening the more modern UPVC one on back of the room and the sash window in the bathroom was ventilation enough and kept the old sash window to the front of the building worked for us. (I suspect this is a listed building, which is why some of the original sash windows remain at the front but they have been changed for UPVC to the rear).

Disappointing
Liked: Location , staff friendly
Disliked: Old and dated , needs money spending on the entire hotel , if it was a cheap hotel I could understand £150 pounds a night , I have stopped in much better and cheaper
