Nice to have stayed but...
Liked: I loved our room and the view looking onto Stephens Green. The room was very comforable, clean and warm. I liked the dining room on the first floor for breakfast the following morning but was disappointed that it was a buffet service as this is a five star hotel and there must have been 5 - 7 staff members walking around with little to do. I was disappointed with the Continental Breakfast as the pastries were very dry and there was only one very small cup of tea from the medium teapot that was placed on my table and I had to keep asking for another pot of tea which took quite some time to delived to our table. My friend looked at the cooked buffet and was agast again at the quality of the hot food.We had dinner the previous evening in the bar as the main dining hall was closed for renovation. The meal I had was Fish and Chips and again was disappointed with that stardard of this dish. The chips were dry and the portion was very small. I expected better from the Shelbourne.
Disliked: The main dining hall was closed for dinner. I was also disappointed that Breakfast was not included especially when out room cost in excess of 430 euros. I was also disappointed that the Breakfast was buffet service in a 5 star hotel. I would have expected this from a 4 star but most definitely not from the Shelbourne.

Was really looking forward to...
Liked: Staff were pleasant and helpful. Door staff in particular were very welcoming.
Disliked: Lots of things!Never been to a hotel where they remove an additional €300 from your card when you arrive - on the off chance that you might spend money on hotel items! Breakfast was a big disappointment - unheated plates and regularly cold food - particularly scrambled egg. €25 for basic breakfast fodder - but if you want a boiled or fried egg. - or toast - that’s €6 extra! And don’t ask for Eggs Benedict (€21) Don’t want my breakfast disturbed by individuals conducting business on their phones or laptops at the next table. I’m not interested in their reports to their bosses. Or sending instructions back to head office.Bedroom temperature fluctuations - asked for help and somebody checked - but no improvement.Orders in the bar confused or neglected on several occasions.OK - only minor irritations. But certainly question the SHELBOURNE 5* claim. Too expensive for the quality of service received. Not enough attention to detail in the right areas. Hotel seems to be living somewhat on its long history. There are better hotels elsewhere. There are better hotels in Dublin! Would we return? No.

Visit in the summer
Liked: The room was beautiful had all the facilities you would expect from a king room - the only down side was the shower was over the bath and mobility was an issue so bear this in mind if you have any mobility issues I was unable to have a shower when I was there I had mentioned this to the staff but there was no alternative solution offered sadly - the staff at reception were excellent and the bar man 'Tom' was excellent friendly knowledgeable and a credit to the hotel - the biggest down side of the hotel is that it was freezing - if you see people sitting in both the residents bar and bar 27 sitting with coats on - take the hint and put the heating on - it was freezing in all the corridors also - the food was delicious and prices extremely affordable for where you are and what you are paying for. The concierge were all excellent - brilliant location and such a beautiful hotel with so much history - On a last note in the residents bar the barman stuck a sneaky 20% tip on our bill without asking which I found a bit assumptive - he handed me the machine I held my card to it and only on looking at the receipt in the room I saw that he had put a 20% service charge without asking - I had only bought our company one round of drinks so please be aware of this and please ask!!! - the next day I passed comment down in bar 27 with another resident what they had done and they said that they had a 10% charge put on theirs also without asking - I wouldnt have minded but we always leave a cash tip for service
Disliked: The hotel including the bars and corridors were freezing - the presumptive of putting on a tip without making customer aware
