Disappointing
Liked: It had a room available on Columbus Day weekend. We enjoyed the hiking trail and spring house.
Disliked: The aging facilities and limited coffee choices (the basement).

Overall good but aesthetically I...
Liked: The location and the property and nice view. Friendly staff.
Disliked: The whole place needs a bit of TLC and upgrades. It felt very outdated due to a random mix of styles. Even though overall the style was beautifully historic the rather big plastic trash can and recycling bin in the room and haphazard furniture from the ‘80s does not make the room look good. The bed was comfortable but the lights were led and bright and the ceiling lights old. The bathrooms were outdated and done in a style of the last century with another ugly plastic trash can. It would be amazing to see this place have several small renovations. Also there was a rack with towels in the entry of the hallway. Handy but don’t put it in the historical entry as it does not mix well. In my opinion this place should be either historical and authentic with small interior design updates to modernize things into the 21st century or keep it consistent and beautifully dated like one can find staying in certain B&Bs in the Hamptons and make one feel like living in the 19th century without the haphazard plastic items and outdated contemporary furniture that hurt the eyes. An interior designer can quickly make these changes and make this place feel coherent.

Passable
Liked: The history of the property is great. The historic buildings are beautiful. The grounds are vast and the whole idea of the place is fascinating. Love the Dirty Dancing meets I Love Lucy with some Caddyshack vibe. The room had a mini fridge, which may be normal in most hotels, but felt extravagant here! We laughed a lot and enjoyed the olden days feel.
Disliked: It’s hard to walk around the place because there’s a golf course in the center and you can’t walk through it, so to get from one building to another is quite a long walk, especially for the primarily elderly clientele. Because of its historic distinction, there are no elevators and we were on the 4th floor of an enormous building. The window AC was very loud, but not cool. The beds are ancient too, but not historically, just old. The bathrooms appear to have been updated in the 60s. There are no coffee machines in the rooms, but there’s coffee on the basement level - 4 floors down. The front door remains locked, so you have to fumble with a real key to get in every time, which doesn’t sound like a big deal, but when dealing with luggage on a vast property, it’s one more inconvenient thing. It’s not cheap considering the uncomfortableness of pretty much everything, but it’s a huge property and I applaud the owners for keeping it afloat.
