Great stay

Liked: The staff a the plough are friendly and helpful and everything was very clean.
Disliked: The walls were very thin and the bathrooms are all macerated so it’s very noisy when people use the bathroom in the night.

Good location

Liked: The location was idea for visiting the castle and close to the town for restaurants and shops.
Disliked: There were signs of wear to some of the fitments. The plumbing arrangement were very noisy. The room was also situated at the back of the hotel with the windows facing a close by wall. The night access was via a fire door by the room via an outside staircase. There were no staff on overnight. It was room only - no option for breakfast. They did do dinner but when we ask for a gluten free menu the staff were very vague and uninformed so we dined out at some very nice restaurants in the town.

Average

Liked: Location
Disliked: The room was dark, the window was too high to see thru. The blind on the window wouldn't roll up (broken). The room was hot. To exit the building on departure you had to go down the fire escape which wouldn't be easy with a suitcase! Also had to enter and exit via fire escape after 10pm. The restaurant wasn't open. The check in staff person wasn't friendly.

Dreadful

Liked: The room was comfortable once you got there.
Disliked: We arrived by car and the only apparent way in to the car park was the tiny archway suitable for a motorbike or tiny car.The atmosphere is very dismal. The girl serving at the bar/receptionist agreed that the archway route was very narrow and suggested parking half a mile away in the public longstay car park and then carrying our bags to the hotel. I walk with a stick. We discovered an alternative but far less obvious route to the car park on second day but no staff gave us these directions. Our room was on second floor, up 4 flights of stairs and no lift. Our tv on first night didn’t work, it was fixed for second night.Hotel doesn’t remain open after 10pm, owner explained that she cannot afford to pay anyone after this time on Friday or Saturday nights.Only way up to bedroom is via rickety wooden fire escape in the dark. When we attempted to leave on Sunday at 10am there was no one around and we had to rely on another guest to open the fire escape door outside, carry bags down the stairs and return our keys to our bedroom. You do say there are stairs but surely you don’t mean or include an outside rickety wooden fire escape in the dark.

I expected better - very...

Liked: The property is ideally located to walk to the castle and alnwick gardens. A short walk from the town with plenty of cafes, pubs and restaurants.
Disliked: There was no option to have breakfast at the hotel. Very disappointing. The hotel is unstaffed overnight. If you return to your room after 10pm or if you want to leave the hotel before the front door is unlocked at midday you have to use the fire escape!!! Unbelievable. We ordered coffee in the bar at 12.30 and staff had to go out into town and buy milk before they could serve us!!The wheelie bins outside the rear entrance from the car park are off putting and could be.placed round the corner. The fire escape area is very untidy - litter, weeds etc.

Liked: The room was ok clean but nothing nothing special
Disliked: Food was terrible I had steak and ale pieI couldn't cut through the crust of the pastry because it was so hardI had to enter through the bottom When I did finally get into the pie the filling was ok but the pie crust was uneatable because it was so hardI would have complained to the very young staff but was so hungry that I ate everything elseAnd didn't want to upset the young girl serving meThe room was okBut the hotel closes at around 10 pm and there are no staff at the hotel thenThe only available exit is through a fire door and down a very steep set of stepsNot for the faint hearted I won't be staying there again Poor value for the moneyFood experience expensive and uneatable

Disappointing and underwhelmed.

Liked: Lovely spacious room nicely furnished
Disliked: Toilet was very problematic to flush, I had to screw the door handle to the en-suite door, fell off. Toilet roll holder coming away from the wall. Staff not very welcoming. Very limited menu for dinner, we went elsewhere having read the menu. Breakfast not available. The Plough has lots of potential, but there is a lot to be done to get it up to the standard expected for the cost of the room.
