Disappointing - 2.0 out of 5

Noisy and not the cleanest!

Liked: The location is the best thing about the property although the building is surrounded by scaffolding at the moment and work is being carried out, if I’d known about this previously I wouldn’t have stayed there. Don’t expect to get the pretty picture postcard photos at present! The bed was comfortable and had clean crisp white linen and the water was hot and plentiful. The lady that served breakfast was very nice.
Disliked: My room (room 1) was above the very noisy bar and adjacent to some guest toilets and the doors to those were banging loudly for most of the late afternoon and evening. There were loud creaking floorboards from the room above and I could hear a dog barking and running around that room, the worst time being from 4am in the morning when it must have needed letting out.The room needed a very thorough clean - I had to get rid of numerous cobwebs and spiders and there was a general lack of attention to detail.I appreciate that this is a very old building but that shouldn’t mean that it should be so uncared for. Flaking paint on the ceilings needs action. Some training for the staff on reception and perhaps a smart uniform would immediately improve first impressions and some nice toiletries in the bathroom would have been appreciated, the mismatched brown bottles with dynamo labels leave much to be desired! The curtains were hanging off and didn’t close properly.A real shame as this could be made into such a lovely hotel with some tlc.My recommendation - stay at the Red Lion down at the harbour, it’s worth the extra money!

Baffled at the state of...

Liked: Great location on the main Clovelly path. Some rooms have a sea view. Hot shower.
Disliked: Did we visit at a bad time? Because I cannot understand the good reviews. Upon arrival, there was scaffolding covering the entire building, which nobody had informed us about, despite phoning the hotel to check details prior to booking. There was nobody at reception to greet us, and even after asking at the bar we were shooed back to reception, where we waited another 15 minutes for someone to arrive. The room was dirty, with cobwebs hanging from the ceiling and bits all over the carpet. A previous guest's trousers were still in the cupboard, which itself was missing a drawer handle. There was a random alarm clock that didn't work and the patio was an absolute mess - not somewhere you could sit and relax without feeling like you were going to fall through the wooden beams (we didn't risk it!) Everything was tired looking and tatty, which would be forgivable had other things been up to scratch or the room price been lower. The bed creaked but was comfortable, and the shower was hot. Location is great. Completely baffled at the state of one of the main hotels in Clovelly! Booking The New Inn does, however, get you free entry into the Visitor Centre and village.

Liked: Great location and friendly staff. Filling breakfast!
Disliked: Could do with redecorating (curtains broken, lights not working etc.) and room felt quite cold (especially after a long wet hike!)

Cold and dirty with nice...

Liked: Lovely location and friendly helpful staff. Food was pretty good but over priced.
Disliked: The room was dirty with cobwebs covering the ceiling, none of the heated towel rails worked and our room was very cold. It is an interesting old pub with good literature in the residents lounge, however it was so badly lit it was nigh on impossible to read any of it!

Pleasant and very comfortable

Liked: Room was comfortable and clean, sheets were very spotless and white! I enjoyed my sleep tremendously with good bedding. Very dog welcoming and staff was very friendly and helpful.
Disliked: For a quiet old fishing village, it was very pretty and to be honest I would not find anything negative to say.
