Superb
Liked: We stayed in the Sir Thomas Berridge room. Top floor at the back of the hotel away from the road. Lovely and quiet room, large and bright. The shower was a little tricky as it was over a large freestanding, deep, roll top bath, with the controls a bit away. Other than that it was great. Huge comfy bed and good air conditioning if you need it. Staff were fabulous and the food was superb. Breakfast was so delicious in the morning. Definitely would recommend this place if you want to feel treated.

Great experience and really welcoming...
Liked: From we reached the hotel to check in, all the way to when were left, all the staff were extremely welcoming and very helpful. This enhanced our stay even more.
Disliked: Just a bit of noise from the bar downstairs, however it was not until very late or too loud.

Excellent apart from the traffic...
Liked: The staff were very friendly and helpful. The service was excellent and the food was outstanding.
Disliked: I would have scored the Marquis de Granby 10/10, because everything was excellent. Everything but for the fact that our room was facing the road, which is directly adjacent to the hotel and there is no double-glazing. Cars and motorbikes were zooming past throughout the night which affected our sleep quite badly. Not something we expected being located in a picturesque country valley or for the price of the room. So given that sleep is an important part of any stay, I have had to score downwards. There are plenty of rooms facing or located away from the road, so best to ask for one of these when booking and then you’ll have a great stay.

Great meal, quiet and comfortable...
Liked: We stayed in the room “Nailbourne”, which is the ground floor, accessible room. We don’t have accessibility needs so can’t really comment on those aspects, although the bathroom was certainly very spacious. We chose the room because it is on the ground floor & we’re too lazy to carry our heavy bags upstairs! The bed is super comfortable & we had a lovely, quiet night’s sleep. Breakfast was delicious and very well presented. We ate dinner in the restaurant (although with the last booking at just 18:30h on Sundays it felt more like lunch). The menu was varied and interesting and our choices were delicious; the restaurant is obviously a very popular local spot & deservedly so.All the staff were tremendously cheerful, helpful and solicitous; it was quite noticeable how much “nicer” they were than at so many other similar hostelries and we really appreciated that.Lastly, after years of trying to find good quality but not “exorbitant luxury” accommodation, with enjoyable food and private parking that is near the Eurotunnel terminal, we are happy to have finally found our go-to night stop.
Disliked: We found the room layout slightly curious, with two (perhaps superfluous?) hand basins in the bedroom as well as one in the bathroom. It’s not a matter of dislike but it seemed odd. Maybe it is something to do with the accessibility features? The heating arrangements were the only thing we would suggest for improvement. There is a fire exit door leading directly to the outside, which is obviously an H&S requirement. It’s probably illegal to put a curtain over it but some form of draught proofing would be appreciated. The only heating is by an A/C unit that was tricky & slow to respond. However, we sorted it eventually and warmed up after a drink in the bar. The bathroom does have a heated towel rail that worked well as long as the door was kept shut. The heating wouldn’t prevent us from returning to stay; we will just try a different room next time.
