Hotel Description
This 16th-century coaching inn has played host to both Dickens and Darwin. With beautiful Elizabethan decor The Lion is set within the heart of historic Shrewsbury. The Lion is a Grade I-listed building and guests can relax by the Tudor fireplace. The Pickwick Papers were written by Charles Dickens at the hotel itself and it has also been visited by the 19th-century Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli as well as the legendary violinist Paganini. Rooms offer unique furnishings with renovated decor and original features. Private bathrooms are included in each room along with a TV and tea/coffee facilities. The many historic streets and shops of central Shrewsbury can be reached within 5 minutes on foot. Pride Hill and Darwin shopping centers are both less than 10 minutes' walk away and Shrewsbury Rail Station is a 15-minute walk from The Lion.

Comfortable stay in central location,...

Liked: Comfortable stay in central location, in Shrewsbury. Room was as clean as you would expect. A good cooked breakfast was included in the overnight rate.
Disliked: The venue is looking its age and would benefit from a substantial investment to upgrade facilities and refresh its decor. There are, currently, no bar facilities.

Suited us for a one...

Liked: The Lion is in a great location in the middle of Shrewsbury . Shower was very powerful. Water was hot. Great breakfast with plenty of choice
Disliked: It is now very dated, tiny tv, no bar (presumably due the use for housing refugees).

Not worth the money. But...

Liked: The hotel is in a good area. Central to most restaurants and shops. The hotel itself is old, which we expected but the rooms a very basic and are tired looking. The rooms were clean but very dated, especially the bathroom it was Very tired looking, the tiles were very dated and over bath shower which was not that good. The extractor fan made a lot of noise and banged a lot through the roof area, which was concerning. The lamps in the bedroom area were not working when we arrived and the curtains and windows were slightly mouldy. The breakfast was ok food was hot but nothing very special. We stayed 2 nights and found limited staff. On the hole this hotel is ideal for pubs and restaurants but in our opinion needs very badly updating and for what we paid was not worth it.

Lovely hotel,full of charm and...

Liked: The location is in the heart of Shrewsbury Centre and in keeping with the town’s character and charm. The hotel has been refurbished and is still work in progress. The breakfast was really nice. This hotel has so much character.
Disliked: Currently there is no bar or restaurant for meals other than breakfast, so a little bit disappointed, but work is still on going and the bar and restaurant will be opening in the future.
