Liked: Beautiful building and perfect location. Comfortable beds and well stocked mini-bar.
Disliked: The day-staff is not interested in the customers. They are not really friendly and treat guests with contempt. Like one morning I asked the gentleman at the front desk to please have my room cleaned quickly because, due to a biliary colic, I was in a lot of pain and I needed to lie down. They made me wait in the lobby for an hour, and no one asked me how I was feeling or offered me a glass of water. Being treated by newyorkers with such a great friendliness, I was really struck by this total lack of empathy. But maybe this is the way to go at The James ... just ignore people... The first receptionist probably didn’t even call housekeeping. I had to ask twice when the room would be ready. Earlier during the same morning, sitting in the lobby with my husband we noticed a dying cockroach and pointed it out to the same gentleman who picked up the cockroach with a piece of paper, and threw it into the trash can in the lobby. He didn't glance or say a word, like cockroaches would be the most normal thing in a lobby of a 4-star hotel.It is also interesting that the hotel claims to offer free coffee and fresh fruit in the morning. Well sure there was coffee, but for four days no fruit in sight. On the last day, my husband asked where the fruit was, and they finally filled the basket.The deluxe rooms, rented via Booking.com, were supposed to have a city view, but the only view we had was an array of small and bigger pipes and looking directly into someone's else room. Being the first time in New York I specifically requested rooms with a view but received, of course, no answer.The fridge in my room didn’t work, and the bulb in the bedside lamp was missing. The fridge was swiftly replaced, but they removed the entire lamp and didn' t replace it.Last reminder for people with lactose intolerance: do not even bother to try to order cappuccino with oat milk or any other milk substitutes for breakfast at the fancy Italian restaurant in the James.
