Old school charm but rejuvenated....

Liked: The Beacon has undergone a few name changes and renovations over the years and I have been there when it was a traditional 50+ year old “dump” with old school character, been there when renovations were partially underway, and stayed there this time after a complete overhaul and rejuvenation of the facility. I am very impressed with the new redesigns, color changes, lighting updates, HVAC updates, and kitchen updates. It’s the same place with a facelift and a lot more pleasant stay. You used to be given a physical door key for your room, now it’s a keycard. The HVAC used to be a window unit pushed through the outer wall, now it’s a proper mini-split unit with a remote. The walls, doors, lighting, windows, appliances, bathroom, etc used to be very old and outdated, now everything is new and current. Very nice. We brought a 15 foot boat and were able to park it no problem in the extra parking near the entrance. Staff was very helpful and accommodating through the booking process and accommodated a late-night check-in with no issue. Another plus is that there is a Dollar General across the street (which hasn’t always been there), making for a very convenient place to get light groceries or supplies.
Disliked: None of the negative items ruined my weekend in any way, but I wanted to list a few things. Although the kitchens have been updated in the rooms with kitchenettes and these are very nice, the kitchen was mildly under-equipped. We were missing some fairly basic items, such as a can opener and a sponge or rag of some sort to clean dishes, and there were only enough dishes for 3 people even though the room sleeps 4. We only had 2 people, but this was still something I noticed. Another minor gripe is that the bathroom sink is outside the bathroom in the room we were in. I have stayed in other rooms at this facility and in those, the sink was within the bathroom. This means that in some of the rooms, you may not have full privacy throughout your entire bathing/grooming routine and should ask ahead if this bothers you. All of this being said, including the positive comments above, this is still one of the lowest-cost motels on the island and I set my expectations accordingly :)

Liked: The staff was very friendly and helpful. When we asked for a chair, table, and hangers, they went out of their way to provide the asked for objects. At 1st, the TV did not work. The staff switched out "their personal TV" so that we would have one.
Disliked: I reserved a room at The Beacon following an HDTV renovation show. We did not get one of those rooms. Our room was fine but was not renovated by HDTV. There were several small things that could be done to bring the rest of the motel up to the HDTV standards. Our floor was warped, and we walked carefully in case it was not sound. The rusted shower curtain bar (inexpensive) should be changed out.

Somewhat disappointed but was a...

Liked: Location was nice with private walkway to beach
Disliked: Felt it was a little deceptive seeing as how it was renovated within the past 10 months by HGTV yet we were placed in a room that looked nothing like what we saw on the tv show and it appeared we were one of maybe 2 other people staying there. Not even a chair to sit on or a bench to place our bags on and no mirror over the sink nor any artwork on the walls. Painters tape was still on the door and they didn’t bother to paint behind the bed’s headboard. The front desk was always closed and no one bothered to provide us the WiFi password.

Unsafe feeling. Not clean in...

Liked: Location. Price.
Disliked: My windows were UNLOCKED. Animal rooms are placed on 2nd floor so you hear them all night. Dog poo all over the property. Had a "renovated" room. Most things did not work. TV was hanging on by one hook. Not able to use. The wine fridge unable to use. AC in room was small and unable to change. Room remained hot. Light switches did not work. Cheer window covering. Major bug problem.
