Not-so-luxury experience

Liked: Booked this hotel as part of my partner’s Christmas present. I was hoping for a luxurious boutique hotel experience as described on the website. Unfortunately the hotel fell short thanks to a few smaller niggles and one big fail.Things started well: we were able to drop our bags at the hotel well before check in, and all day after check out. On checking in we were given welcome glasses of bubbly. The room was very clean and a reasonable size and the bed comfy with a choice of pillows. The decor in the lobby, bar, lounge, restaurant and lift was gorgeous. Staff were polite and helpful. The hotel is very conveniently located just moments from Liverpool Street. Despite major building works next door you couldn’t hear any of them in the room.Where it fell down:Many small things which added up to a less than 5 star experience.There is no way to control the thermostat in the room yourself - you have to WhatsApp reception to get it adjusted. This means either constantly bothering reception or putting up with a noisy fan and poor range of temperatures during the night.Not enough teabags in the room by default. Milk is fresh but there’s no fridge so it sits in a warm cupboard all day and night.Only a small handheld mirror by the seating area, and a large mirror inside the wardrobe that’s nowhere near plug sockets or seating.One of the bedside lamps was broken and flickered.Paint was chipped in visible places which meant it felt scruffy and not the high quality finish I’d expect.Decor in the room was lacklustre compared to other parts of the hotel. Felt more like a corporate chain than boutique.The killer was the almost £27 service charge handed to us as we checked out. This was optional but presented in such a way that it felt impossible to refuse. A really cheeky and manipulative little move on top of an almost £500 stay for two nights.

Liked: The decor, the staff and service and the restaurant.Had the best night sleep from any hotel I’ve ever stayed in. Blackout blinds were the best and it was so quiet.Room wasn’t stuffy.
Disliked: There was a very strong smell of damp in the ensuite, which was such a shame because it was beautifully decorated.
