Not enjoyable at all

Liked: Location
Disliked: No facilities we had booked the room in January only to find when we arrived that the hotel was being refurbished and all the facilities shut. We had not received any communication to inform us of this and this made the stay very uncomfortable. There was also a lot of Mold on the curtains in the room from where they had been damp from condensation

Could have been lovely but...

Liked: Staff were welcoming and friendly. Food in the restaurant at breakfast and lunch was excellent.
Disliked: Our room (104) was very small whereas others who had booked the same standard room as us, at the same time, had much bigger rooms. The view out of our window was a scrap heap. The hotel was under renovation and we were not advised of this at the time of booking, prior to arrival or on arrival. We had booked this hotel as a spa hotel as it is advertised, but due to the renovations there were no leisure facilities available. The renovations also meant that the bar had limited drinks available which meant we spent less time in the hotel than we planned to.

Very good

Liked: Staff were very friendly and helpful. The room was fine. Good breakfasts.
Disliked: Most of the facilities were unavailable due to building work. The photos on Booking.com bear little or no resemblance to the present, and in my opinion, are misleading. The pool is out of action, and the bar is much reduced, with no fireplace. The draft beer pumps were not working on the day we arrived. I felt sorry for the staff having to fend off questions. Also reduced size of car park was not ideal.

Great hotel with fantastic staff...

Liked: Fantastic staff, very friendly and helpful.Great food, dinner has to be among the best in Kendal.
Disliked: The hotel has been undergoing a refurbishment which means the ground floor is looking good. However, the rooms appear to have been neglected and looking a bit shabby. Although the bed linen was clean the duvets and pillows are old and smelly, which comes through. On our first night the radiators in the room weren’t working and it was the coldest night of the year so far so it was freezing. However the fantastic staff gave us extra blankets for the night and sorted the problem out the next day so the second night was much better. I really hope the rooms are next to be refurbished as this is a great hotel and we’ve previously enjoyed staying here.

Disappointing

Disliked: It was very cold. The hotel was still under going maintenance. No key was available. They blamed booking.com for putting us in the wrong room which I thought was unprofessional.

Looking forward to a more...

Liked: Last minute stop off for a night's sleep. Lovely room, comfortable bed - unfortunately the lift was out & awaiting repair (they were working on it as we departed the next morning). Bottles of water in room & nice tea/coffee tray. Particularly liked the sustainable skin friendly bathroom toiletries with information on the company. Impressed me greatly. The smell from the dining room when we arrived rather worse for wear were delicious - however we were so worn out from travelling sleep was the priority sadly & an early start meant we could not stay for a leisurely breakfast which looked fabulous - perhaps next time!
Disliked: Just the stairs & that was out of anyone's control- unfortunate timing.
