Nice hostel, bad vibes.
Liked: The hostel itself is lovely; you can tell a lot has been invested in creating a homely environment. There was a spacious kitchen and nice communal spaces to relax. There is a bar on site which opens in the evenings and serves cheap drinks during happy hour. The rooms are pretty small but the beds are comfortable and have curtains.
Disliked: I think this hostel has a lot of potential to be great. Unfortunately I think it falls massively short; not on what it offers, but rather on account of what it has become. As a solo female traveller, I found the hostel to be quite uninviting as a whole for backpackers and those just passing through. It felt very cliquey, with groups obviously on working holiday visas (many also living and working in the hostel) taking over the common areas and not so much as even looking in your general direction. Myself and some other female travellers I met there had the same sentiment about the place and shared the feeling that we were almost intruding in someone’s home. As much as I recognise the challenges for those on working holiday visas to find accommodation, it felt like they had co-opted this space for themselves at the expense of us. That said, there were some really lovely and friendly staff working there - the bartender and the young canadian girl at reception in particular. Unfortunately though, they were few and far between. To add to the already unwelcoming atmosphere, me and my friend both experienced some hostility/passive aggressiveness from a couple of the staff. I was rudely handed a dish towel and asked to dry my dishes before I had even finished washing them up. My friend had a very similar experience involving a different staff member. To rub salt into the wound, the more established residents were not targeted with passive aggressiveness and were allowed to leave all their dirty pots, pans and plates around the kitchen. It felt like one rule for them and another for us. In conclusion, for less then $80 a night, I could’ve found a more comfortable home to squat in. ps. the storage cages under the bed are a health and safety hazard. I was nearly concussed from the top falling onto my head whilst putting my stuff inside. you have been warned…
