Great location, but needs taking...

Liked: Superb location, great staff. A good view over Vancouver sound from the water facing rooms. It’s worth the extra for that side of the hotel. Nice parking facilities underground, extra money but well worth it. It’s a short walk to Stanley Park, which is one of the jewels of Vancouver in my opinion.
Disliked: Sadly, I have to report some issues. This is a mainstream Hotel with a quite high rate per night. Because of this, I did expect top-notch. I think maybe I should’ve read more reviews on here but I have to say it was the “pinnacle“ that swayed me Into expecting a wonderful view. The view was very good and at check-in, after having sent them a message explaining that it was my first time in Canada and that I would appreciate high room, the staff member was excellent and suggested that he picked me a floor. I had the best view. He was right. Nice room with balcony. I had the usual air conditioning noise, but as per normal you turn that off when you go to bed. My issue started when I put my head on the pillow because a deep hum seemed to be throughout the room and through the bed and pillow. Walking around the room and moving through the bed, it was just possible to null this noise but it was at a level that it wasn’t long before I was on the phone to Reception. The night manager came up and agreed that this was unacceptable. She gave me another room on another level which was indeed, somewhat better although not completely gone. The issue was of course having to pack again and by this time it was around 10 pm and jet lagged from the UK. In the morning, I spoke to the day manager who was extremely helpful. He gave me a choice of rooms that I could then visit and choose the best. They’re all the same basic layout so this wasn’t any upgrade as such, just a hope to reduce the noise. He agreed with me that this rather soured my stay so I did get free parking and free dinner, which mollified me somewhat. (Finally, I did realise that this noise permeates the hotel because they probably have an old air-conditioning system). This last comment brings me to the general feeling. The hotel is really in need of an upgrade. Rooms were clean, but the fittings and fixtures definitely showed their age, and in one room the shower curtain smelt slightly of mould.
