Wonderful two night stay in...

Liked: A wonderful property with attentive and pleasant staff. The master suite room was spacious with a wonderful view of the gardens. All meals, which included the special taster menus, were enjoyable.Particularly impressed with the 'turn down' service so that guests can return to their rooms after dinner with weather information provided and classical music from the TV playing quietly in the background. Small but 'classy' touches.
Disliked: I picked out this hotel for my wife's birthday and having read all the details about the expected dress code in the main restaurant, I was slightly disappointed that at least two other diners were dressed 'scruffily' including jeans and baseball cap.Inconsistent application of the dress code means that for many of us the experience would become less 'special'.There is a dilemma here for the property, I hope the hotel will be brave enough to expect diners in the main restaurant to comply with the dress code.

Superlative in all respects

Liked: Fabulous, historical accommodation. Very friendly, helpful staff. Delicious food. Beautiful grounds.
Disliked: Just one suggestion - the unique Welsh character of the area could perhaps be reflected more fully in the catering e.g. offer only Welsh cheeses on the menu (there is a huge range available), Welsh honey at breakfast, offer cocktails containing Welsh gin, whisky, vodka.

Wonderful historic hotel in a...

Liked: Lovely location, beautiful historic building that was tastefully decorated, great ambience. The gardens were fabulous to look onto at breakfast time.
Disliked: The meals were very disappointing, the staff need upskilling. My husband's evening meal was terrible with lots of fish bones rendering it inedible (it was fried fish so you couldn't see them). The wait staff apologized (apparently the chef said that the "fish doesn't usually come like this"- pre--packaged?) and a new meal was cooked. There was no offer of a complimentary drink while we had to wait, I had already finished my meal by then. I had asked for sparkling water but was given flat and was then charged for it. As a licensed UK premise portable water is meant to be free, in Australia there are fines for non-compliance. We were charged the full amount for the experience, I queried the bill, and one dessert charge was taken off the bill & a reduced VAT, hardly compensation for a ruined evening. Breakfast was also a disappointment, the poached eggs were hard, and the staff didn't know what some of the options were and had to go back and forth to ask the kitchen. There are some fire and safety issues, our room was on the top floor and the old-fashioned lock was very hard and, in the end, we didn't lock it at night as we wouldn't be able to exit quickly in the event of a fire. The rooms are a bit dated but comfortable. Attention to detail is lacking; despite being aware of my name I was addressed by surname only (no title) in a request for feedback. I supplied such and never received a reply to some of my queries.
