A pleasant stay in Ripon

Liked: A warm, friendly welcome from the staff. Room was quiet - set back from the road. Cozy. Comfy bed.

Poor quality of the room/facilities/cleanliness...

Liked: Nice location, close to Ripon centre. That is the only positive about an extremely disappointing stay, no way did this room fairly reflect the price paid of £255.48 for a single night. We were unable to raise our concerns before leaving as there was absolutely nobody about when we checked out.
Disliked: We booked this hotel reluctantly as we do not usually pay over £255 for a one night stay, but we were meeting friends and this was the only room available. We checked reviews, all very positive, so booked, thinking we were treating ourselves & expected a really nice room to reflect the price.The first thing we noticed was a musty smell from the bathroom. The room itself looked nice and airy, with a high ceiling, but cheap, white melamine furniture was badly scratched & chipped, the un-upholstered stool at the 'dressing table' was rickety with the top loose. There were two bedside cabinets, my husband tried to open the top drawer of one and the front came away in his hand, the other top drawer only opened an inch or so. The non-matching wardrobe behind the front door had a broken handle and one solitary coat hanger. The headboard of the single bed was badly frayed, that on the double was very grubby, the taps & plughole in the sink were corroded, as was the towel holder and behind/below the toilet was disgusting. Other things to mention are: broken hook on the bathroom door, the light over the sink did not work, neither did the tv remote, cobwebs and rust spots on various light fittings, plastic spoons for tea/coffee and a smashed velux window. Generally, the walls were scuffed with chipped paint, plus dried on residues above the glass shelf over the bathroom sink - the whole room basically appeared very tatty. We did not go looking for faults, these were all very easy to see. The photos on the website are nothing like this room, the room description lists coffee maker, hairdryer, fan, telephone - none of which were present, it also mentions 'large double bed', definitely not the case – surely all of this is false advertising and unfairly misleading.We spoke to a couple who had paid £56 for the same night in the pub, we were in the stables. How is this fair? We have contacted booking.com & the hotel, very poor response.

Poor show must do better

Liked: The location setting is good for us as we have used this location many times before with the previous landlord. Had wonderful times and fantastic breakfast.
Disliked: The blind was broken in our room 10 and we had to secure a towel over the blind to keep our privacy. The bathroom smelt terrible, and the room was damp. When we brought this to the attention of the young girl, she said she knew the room needed updating but nothing she could do. Young kids drinking and sharing drugs in the car park. Late night drinking and rowdy behaviour.No food served at the pub at all.This used to be a good place to stay, but we will not be returning.
