Disappointing - 2.0 out of 5

Disappointing

Liked: Superb staff - helpful and friendlyVery comfortable bedSpacious roomAttractive public areas
Disliked: Room 435 supposedly a 'superior' room - grubby, outdated and in dire need of a refurb - worn furniture - stained sofa - very poor shower - poorly flushing lavatory - ceiling paoer had water damage marks on it - poor double glazing loud traffic noise until well past midnight - 40" tv 15' from bed - had our stay been more than one night would have demanded a change of room but one wonders if any ither room would have been better.Breakfast mediocre at best - very limited continental choice, coffee machine coffee undrinkable - hot buffet just about edible except eggs which were tepid and black pudding which was baked to rock hard consistency. This hotel is on a downward spiral.

Great

Liked: Lovely food and really comfortable rooms
Disliked: Not that I didn’t like but for the prestige rooms the sofas needed updating but not a huge issue

Poor - 0.5 out of 5

Avoid

Liked: Bed was comfortable
Disliked: Found out on check in that pool had been closed down, this is the only reason we'd booked the hotel. During check in I'd questioned when breakfast was served as it states differently online. I was met with a patronising response. Reception referred to my son as 'that child' while questioning his age.Room was a good size, but stains on the carpet, makeup stains on the wall and a stain on the shower curtain. Shower had very little pressure and struggled to wash my hair without standing right against the wall.Wedding party scheduled at the same time, so we weren't able to book into the restaurant. Bar menu was decent however the majority of food looked microwaved when it arrived, chips were oven chips, not home made.Breakfast - mushrooms were both over cooked and cold, the beans were a cheaper brand, hash browns not quite cooked enough. Pretty poor for a Mercure and left bitterly disappointed.

Decent sleep but not impressed...

Liked: Room was of a good size, the bed was comfortable enough, and the staff was helpful. There is free car park, and a gym in the basement.
Disliked: The hotel is looking a bit run-down and in need of renovation. The swimming pool is no longer accessible by hotel guest, the gym is but it's very rusty and old.

If you want to travel...

Liked: Location was ok
Disliked: So dated. Room key didn’t work 3 times had to go and up down to reception. Receptionist didn’t seem interested. Room was freezing due to window being left wide open. No heating in the room. No plug sockets near bed. Bed was uncomfortable. The walls were damaged. List goes on
