Historic Elegance Right by the Action

Nestled beside the iconic Alamo and just a short stroll from the bustling San Antonio River Walk, the Menger Hotel blends vintage charm with modern convenience. This stately, historic property is a favorite for travelers who love a little character with their comfort. With an outdoor pool, peaceful courtyard garden, and on-site dining, it’s a calm, classic retreat right in the heart of downtown.

Why Concert-goers love it

You’re within walking distance of several downtown venues, including theaters, live music bars, and open-air performance spaces. The hotel’s location next to the Rivercenter Mall means you’ve got easy access to late-night eats and rideshares. It’s far enough from the late-night noise to allow for a restful post-show sleep, but still close enough to dive into the scene. Plus, with check-in from 4:00 PM and check-out at 11:00 AM, there’s time to relax around your show schedule.

Who this Hotel is great for

- Groups of friends who want a central base to hit up multiple shows
- Solo travelers catching a legendary artist
- Couples mixing music with a romantic weekend
- Fans looking to unwind in a quieter, historic setting after a show
- Budget-conscious music lovers who want value in a prime location

Food and Drink Options

The on-site Colonial Room Restaurant serves breakfast and lunch, perfect for a late wake-up after a concert night. While there’s no 24/7 room service, the location next to Rivercenter Mall opens up a world of walkable dining options late into the night. Grab coffee from your in-room maker before heading out, or hit one of the nearby cafes for a bite.

Nightlife Options

While the hotel itself doesn’t host live music, you’re just minutes away from a variety of downtown bars, lounges, and venues. Whether you’re into rooftop cocktails, chill dives, or live bands, San Antonio’s nightlife is right outside your door. And when you’re ready to wind down, the hotel’s quiet halls and historic ambiance offer a peaceful escape.

What People Say

Guests rave about the character and history of the Menger, often calling it a hidden gem. The location earns high marks for its walkability to concerts, attractions, and restaurants. Many also appreciate the friendly staff and the relaxing courtyard pool—a rare bonus in a downtown hotel.

Areas for Improvement

Some rooms feel a bit dated compared to modern chains, and the historic charm comes with thinner walls—so light sleepers might want to pack earplugs. WiFi is free, but reviewers note it could be stronger in some areas.

The Bottom Line

A beautiful blend of history, location, and comfort, the Menger Hotel is a smart choice for concert-goers who want to stay central without sacrificing charm or quiet.

Overall my wife and I...

Liked: The history and architecture was very impressive. The location around the hotel was convenient and at walking distance to other places we wanted to see.
Disliked: The AC would not get as cold as I would have thought. I wish a microwave in the room would be good to add and also a continental breakfast inclusion or at least a more affordable breakfast menu.

Menger not such a great...

Liked: The location is the best! It's in the heart of everything. You just walk everywhere. That is the best part of this place.
Disliked: The beds are horrible. So uncomfortable. We actually left a night early because we couldn't sleep in those beds another night. We did get a great value on the hotel but our room was like in the older part of the hotel which really needs some work. They need some updated amenities for what everyone is used to like USB charging ports etc. Rooms do not have a microwave but there is one in the hallway that everyone shares...Really? Ceiling in bathroom was bubbling. It looked very worn. The shades on the lamps looked like they had been rather brushed someone was really rough on them. They had a lot of dents. The mirror in the bathroom really could use a frame. It's very old. The beds are all full size instead of queen like most hotels. We have stayed here before but we were in the newer remodeled side last time. That side is very nice. So a great value on your room might not be that good of a deal at this hotel.

It was a magical time...

Liked: This hotel has always been on my dream list of places to stay. So when the price was right, I booked a room and was so glad I did. I loved that I could feel like I was walking back in time when staying at the hotel. My favorite places were the original entry, where you can see the 3 indoor balconies of the rooms upstairs. The wallpaper is gorgeous. The room we stayed in was exceptional as well. My goal for this trip was to experience everything the hotel had to offer and to feel like I was back in time for my trip, and I did exactly that. We ate a great hamburger and fries at the Bar, and we dined for Breakfast the next morning.
Disliked: I had nothing negative to say about the hotel. It was fabulous. I only wish they had more of a write-up somewhere in the hotel, a pamphlet of sorts that told more of the history of the hotel. I googled to find the history. As I love old buildings, I enjoyed learning when the additions took place, and that it was owned by several owners. I know most people don't think of these things like me, but with the ever-evolving new buildings with no personality or history, I truly enjoy that we get to go to places like this to discover the past that was before us. There was a pamphlet, but I thought it could have used more information.

Will be returning for our...

Liked: The historic feeling of the hotel tied with a beautiful architecture was absolutely amazing. I personally enjoyed that walking outside of the front of the hotel , you are immediately met with a beautiful park, shops, mall entrance , and the Alamo. Everything was right at our fingertips. Of course my children loved the pool area and the garden.
Disliked: I do not have anything to complain about of course keep in mind that the level of luxury provided by this hotel is set in an extremely old building that is comfortable but small.
