Melville castle
Liked: Our stay could have gone so much better. This is listed as a 4 star hotel . . . . . . .Watch out for 10% they add on your dinner bill. It's in small print at the bottom of the menu, so take your glasses to dinner.£17.50 each is a lot to charge for breakfast. I asked for smashed avo with 2 poached eggs and some mushroomS. We stayed 3 days. I got 2 medium sized mushrooms twice, then 1 mushroom on the last day. On one day there was vacuuming happening outside the breakfast room which was unpleasant to listen to.They ran out of Apple cider on the day we checked in of our 3 day stay and said they could not replenish their stock as their supplier was also out of stock. There were shops just down the road but this did not seem like an option for castle staff.Room servicingThey didn't replenish the sparkling water for the 3rd day.One morning we came back from breakfast as someone was leaving our room at 9.30 am. He'd remade the bed but not topped up tea, coffee or milk. We had to help ourselves to the cart. We discovered later that someone else had been the room to refresh the water and probably the tea and coffee. We didn't know this as it is normally all done at once. I did not expect anyone to be in our room until after 11, which was checkout time, if we were leaving that day. We weren't.There were no instructions on how to operate the shower. Once we worked it out, it alternated between hot and cold continuously, so showering was unpleasant. The conditioner had to banged on the side on the sink to get it out of the bottle as it didn't move otherwise. It was in a glass bottle, so it couldn't be squeezed. There was one face washer between us.The TV had limited stations and had to "warm up" before it could find some of the channels. The manager said it was a reception issue for the castle.

Lovely hotel, restaurant needs attention...
Liked: The property is lovely, not to easy to find when using a sat nav as a couple of others agreed. Lovely grounds and very welcoming.
Disliked: The property was lovely. Unfortunately I wasn’t very happy with the restaurant. It looked like a cafe, I know that sounds bad, but it did. My starter was not right. I realise it was a cold to warm starter, but it was freezing. Mozzarella is not good! It was just dumped on the plate, no thin toast ( I have this regularly and it’s always served with something) cold roasted tomatoes and two bits of onion. I asked for toast and was given a thick chunk. The steak on the main was amazing as were the chips, but yet again stone cold roasted tomatoes! They are nasty cold. The garlic butter was mixed with oil I think as it was very oily tasting with very little garlic. At £104 for the meal for two I did expect better and even when I informed the restaurant staff they just looked at me blankly. The overall stay was pleasant and two thirds of the meal good. Such a shame about the rest.
