Awful check-in experience

Liked: Location
Disliked: Left locked outside at midnight by a horrible check in experience. We arrived after normal check in hours, which the hotel was aware of in advance. On our arrival we had to phone a number to be told that we would not be let into the building until our payment had been processed. This was unexpected as we thought we would have already paid through booking.com. The worst part about this experience was being left outside late at night on a side road in the city that did not feel particularly safe. I asked if reception could call security while we waited for the payment to be processed but they would not even call security to let us inside until the payment went through. I think that it is pretty shameful to leave your guests outside in the middle of the night.
