Terrible smell and poor management

Liked: I booked this hotel through booking.com. I made a request for no air freshener/fragrance in room due to health issues. The hotel itself is on a quiet and dark street, it didn't really feel safe. The receptionist was friendly. The room was along an unheated corridor overlooking an empty pool. The room was small, cramped and had a horrendous odour. Not sewage but a weird smell I've never encountered before. My throat immediately started to sting/burn. I could tell there was no way I could sleep in there so we went back to reception immediately and asked if we could see another room. The second room was across the street in a deserted building which was in the middle of renovation. There was no flooring in the hall and a random plank of wood inside the room. It was bigger and brighter than the first room but had the same bad smell. I stood at the entrance for about 5 minutes seeing if I might get used to it, but my throat was stinging and I developed a headache. I went back to reception and was told that all the rooms smell the same. I asked if we could have a refund (I had just paid by credit card on arrival) and was told that wasn't possible. I knew it was possible so the receptionist phoned her manager who insisted I could not have a refund. I argued politely for about 10 minutes and the receptionist was nice and sympathetic and called her manager a few times, but he wouldn't budge. I feel it is unreasonable not to refund my payment because the room was unsuitable and no costs had been incurred by them. I had made a request for a room without fragrance and if that wasn't possible, the hotel should have informed me prior to my arrival and I could have found a hotel that didn't smell like death. I made it clear I would be leaving a bad review to warn others who are sensitive to bad smells, so this won't be a surprise. This is the first time anything like this has happened to me and I travel extensively.
Disliked: I didn't like anything.

Liked: Everything was clean and nice,the bed very comfortable.
Disliked: Maybe can add some plate,some glasses...etc ,a coffee machine maybe?

Great single night stopover

Liked: The location to the city centre was great. Secure parking 8 euros or loads of parking off street. Room was perfect for a single night stop over.
Disliked: Nothing

Liked: My daughter was delighted to get a Gluten Free breakfast - wide choice of items for everyone too. Staff were very friendly and helpful - much appreciated.
Disliked: Room was a little on the warm side.

Disliked: No food options in close walking distance

Not too far off centre,...

Liked: We need a very safe garage and the hotel has one! The room was on a courtyard which I am sure is pretty in the summer. The staff were brilliant.
