Good

Liked: 1. We stayed in Bedroom 10, which was a lovely large room. 2. The staff were good, cheerful and helpful. We told the staff beforehand that we are deaf and can lip-read if they speak slowly and open their mouths when talking to us. They obliged and we were able to communicate easily.
Disliked: 1. We stayed in Bedroom 10. There were no shelves in the bathroom for our toiletries, so we had to put them on the floor !2. On our first night, the roast potatoes were rock-hard. Probably overcooked ! The vegetables including the Brussel sprouts were hard and probably undercooked ! On the second night, the roast potatoes and the seasonal vegetables were better prepared and delicious.

Friendly and helpful staff and...

Liked: Excellent breakfast, including good quality barrista coffee - flat white - and very friendly and helpful team, including reception.
Disliked: Tired rooms and furniture and fittings, including poor lighting and pretty dreadful bathroom with cheap bath and broken shower fittings, pullcord overhead lighting and no ambient light over the mirror. Really disappointing. Restaurant stopped serving at 2030.

Absolutely awful

Liked: Main building is lovely to look at and that’s about it.
Disliked: Booked as a treat for us for my wife’s birthday - wish we hadn’t.Arrived at 6pm to find no parking and a loud wedding party in the marquee who had taken over the reception and lounge area- not their fault but we weren’t advised when booking and were expecting a quiet spa hotel experience.Room (Anne of Cleeve courtyard building) was very cold- heating wasn’t on.Bathroom had broken shower fixings, chipped bath and the window was boarded up with a painted wooden board that was mouldy.Toilet roll holder and wardrobe door handles were loose and not repaired.I had advised of my gluten free diet (I’m Coeliac so it’s medical not a lifestyle choice) but hotel had no record of this and had no alternatives - only available meal was from the standard menu which happened to be gluten free and was a grilled peach salad. The GF menu was a standard menu with pen used to put an ‘x’ next to meals (as not GF) and a tick for GF. As said, for a vegetarian, only option was a warm peach salad.Manager was apologetic and lovely, said they should have been notified as communication was through Booking.com and that the heating came on at 6:30 pm.I checked the radiators at 7pm and they were cold with no heating coming through- as a plumber, I can say with confidence that the heating was not on or not working. We were so dissatisfied that we asked for a refund and left without a meal and without staying. First time we’ve ever done that and, having traveled 200 miles to stay at the hotel, it wasn’t a decision taken lightly. We’re regular hotel stayers and have always accepted issues or resolved them with staff at the time but this was not able to be resolved.Manager apologised and gave us a complimentary slip for one nights stay in the future and promised us a better experience- needless to say we’re not convinced and then found the slip was valid only until August 2024, so had expired already!

A beautiful country hall hotel.

Liked: A beautiful hotel inside and out. Exceptionally comfortable beds. Brilliantly equipped games room. Excellent restaurant. Attentive staff. Brilliant ambiance.
Disliked: The floorboards are exceptionally squeaky (it’s a period property after all). However no thought regarding this is shown from staff in their quarters above our room who walked back and forth literally all night. We got absolutely no sleep which was such a shame in such a comfortable room.
