Kathleen, Somerv, visiting Jimmy's Jazz and Blues Club Portsmouth Fri, 29 March 2024
Came to Portsmouth for a show at Jimmy's Jazz.
Liked: We love older hotels that are beautifully maintained. This gem is in an excellent location for visitors.
Disliked: Nothing disappointed! Maybe a hairdryer in the bathroom.

Charmingly individual hotel with great...
Liked: This is a truly 'boutique' hotel, beautifully furnished and decorated. Room and bathroom very clean and comfortable. Good coffee and healthy snacks available downstairs day and night. No need for keys or plastic keycard, you just use a code to get into the hotel out of hours and into your room. Great location in central Portsmouth, which is a lovely working port with river views, history, shops, bars and restaurants. It's opposite the Portsmouth Museum which is well worth a visit. Next door is Jumping Jays which does 'shuck a buck' (British translation = one oyster for a dollar!) on Tuesdays, great fish restaurant. There is a very good Japanese restaurant attached to this hotel (dinner only) which we didn't try but my sister rates it highly.
Disliked: Well, there's no onsite parking because this is a restored old building in central Portsmouth. We didn't mind as we left the car at my brothers and only needed a hotel for one night. You can drop your bags off outside but then have to use their offsite parking service at $40 a night, a bit pricey if you were there several nights. If you know Portsmouth and don't mind a bit of a walk, there are streets further out where you could leave your car for free, but for convenience I guess many would use their parking service.

A Boutique Hotel in Downtown...
Liked: Hotel Thaxter offers style and comfort in a convenient location in downtown Portsmouth. Our room, while on the small side, had good amenities and a strong shower (always a plus for us). Our overnight stay was quiet and provided good sleep on a solid bed. The two staff members whom we encountered were always helpful and well-informed. Lastly, the small pull-out parking space in the alley beside the hotel provided a convenient spot to unload our luggage and get it into the hotel with ease.
Disliked: Although we used the tight elevator to access our room on the second floor, there was still a set of small set of stairs that these two seniors needed to navigate with our heavy suitcases. We also thought this type of smallish boutique hotel in a historic building should have offered free breakfast, even with limited Continental-style offerings, especially since it boasts an appealing restaurant space on the first floor of the building. Lastly, figuring out where to park our rental car was confusing to us until we were on the ground in Portsmouth (we ended up using the closest pay parking lot that was a block away, was free after 8 p.m. and proved safe, as we were told). The Hotel Thaxter staff was prompt and helpful in providing info on parking via email prior to our stay but their various options were still difficult to assess before our first visit to Portsmouth.
