Liked: The location is great, just opposite the Karl Marx monument in the city center. But if you don't speak fluent German, don't bother the staff, then go somewhere else!
Disliked: The staff at this hotel work strictly according to the tried-and-true German "Dienst nach Vorschrift" Style, i.e. doing the absolute minimum for the guest (the guest is here for the benefit of the hotel, not the other way around) and work embarrassingly strictly according-to-protocol. I am happy I speak fluent German, otherwise I guess the service would have been even worse... And the whole place is extremely ex-GDR; there was a lot of modernisation in the early 1990s but since then nothing has happened, which actually makes this place rather outdated and run down (if you don't fancy some time travel!) There is no aircon in the rooms = avoid in the summer! I arrived on the German Unity Day (when most shops are closed) and there was a sign outside the hotel bar that it would open at 5 PM. But exactly at 5 PM, the text was swiftly changed to "bar will remain closed today" (of course in German only), meaning that you couldn't even get a beer, much less something to eat, in this enormous hotel! And btw, if you'd like your car to be soaked in guano, you can park it under the trees on the hotel parking for 15 € a day... Sum of all this: Stay Somewhere Else!!!
