Parking nightmare - unpleasant and...
Liked: Quaint but very compact hotel in the old town. It has a lift. Well located for on-foot exploration.
Disliked: We found out on arrival that the hotel is in an alley, accessible only on foot. When we booked the hotel we emphasised the vital importance of parking as we were on a road trip. Although their pre-booked spaces were already reserved, we were assured, in an email, that we "will find spaces on the lower levels". Not so. When we arrived in Trieste early evening after a long drive, the designated carpark - which is an unwelcome hike from the hotel if you have luggage - was full. Other downtown car parks were also full, and the limited street parking was full too. With literally nowhere to go we spent two and half hours driving in circles around the city centre waiting for a space to open up that happened to coincide with our driving past, because you have to keep moving, you can't queue anywhere. We lost our dinner reservation and it ruined our entire evening. To be fair, the front of house lady sought to help us with our bags, but on the major issue of there being literally nowhere to park - she was frustratingly defensive and entirely unapologetic. She railed back at me saying that they didn't guarantee parking, despite - when booking - our being explicitly assured that "we will find spaces on lower levels"; not might, but "will". I suspect that the management knows there is a significant parking issue in Trieste, and that it would justifiably deter some people, so they don't adequately inform those coming by car just bad it can get.It was a very infuriating experience for which I still think we deserve some form of apology, consideration and compensation. This was some of the worst hassle I have experienced in decades of international travel.P.S. The breakfast offering is okay, relatively modest compared to many hotels we stayed at, and the breakfast room is cramped; getting food and eating it is elbow to elbow - I would take one's breakfast to one's room.
