Kate, Exeter, visiting O2 Academy Birmingham Wed, 5 February 2020

I have stayed in many Hotel du Vins over the years and slowly the food and service is going downhill at a couple of the venues. Breakfast both here and in the Exeter hotel was lukewarm with scrambled eggs cold and inedible. Buffet selection average and service average. Such a shame as it used to be excellent and the rooms are amazing.

Liked: The rooms.
Disliked: Breakfast was awful.

Good but may look elsewhere...

Liked: Shame lifts didn't work, no phone in room to call room service either , shame as stayed here before , but if your going to have room service ... then leave a phone in the room , rather than 3 flights of stairs between us and reception.
Disliked: The above

Overpriced and not that good...

Liked: Location was nice, central and easy walk from new street station
Disliked: Lift out of order, plug in heaters in the room, room felt cramped and the bathroom was actually bigger than the room. Decor was jaded and scratched in many places. For the money (£234 for room only) it just didn’t feel good value for money

Very good

Liked: Communal areas and bistro were lovely and looked fantastic. Staff were also lovely and looked smart, and were very helpful. Room (suite) was spacious, furnished nicely, bed was great, loved the bath and shower.
Disliked: Some maintenance needed in both communal and private areas. Toilet handle fell apart, coffee machine had broken pieces, and a part of the handrail on staircase was wobbly. Also elevator was out of order.

Poor Stay

Liked: The building was beautiful, the reception staff were very helpful, and the location was great for train station and city centre.
Disliked: The lift didn't work, the radiators in the room didn't work, portable heaters were provided, and the heat was very drying. The food in the restaurant for the evening meal and breakfast were poor with elements inedible. Evening 2 we didn't eat in the hotel restaurant even though we had dinner, bed and breakfast package, and booked a table at the Ivy.
