Kate, Exeter, visiting O2 Academy Birmingham Wed, 5 February 2020

I have stayed in many Hotel du Vins over the years and slowly the food and service is going downhill at a couple of the venues. Breakfast both here and in the Exeter hotel was lukewarm with scrambled eggs cold and inedible. Buffet selection average and service average. Such a shame as it used to be excellent and the rooms are amazing.

Liked: The rooms.
Disliked: Breakfast was awful.

Disliked: The mattress was higher at the feet end than the head, although a memory foam it was still really hard and therefore uncomfortable…same for the pillows, feel good initially but then turn to rock when compressed, not a very good nights sleep.Full English breakfast looked posh but you didn’t really get value for money.

Lovely grand room with a...

Liked: We stayed one night on a Friday in January so the price was great! The room (Courvoisier) was spacious and grand - the highest ceilings I've ever seen in a room and the biggest and best bathtub! Since it was January the hotel seemed very quiet and mostly empty so we had a very peaceful and restful stay. I had seen in a previous review that the street and radiators were noisy but that was not the case for us in our room, we had an excellent sleep (and I'm a light sleeper). The cast iron radiators were turned off and instead there were plug in radiators which kept the room nice and cosy even on a freezing January night. The bed was incredibly comfortable, the mattress seemed of good quality with just the right amount of softness.
Disliked: The hotel is completely cashless :( We wanted to get change to leave a tip for the cleaning staff but were unable to as they do not keep any cash - very unfortunate for staff who could benefit from a nice tip. There were also minor nicks in the walls and paint, stains on the TV table, the rollup window shade was quite wrinkled. None of these took away from the lovely feeling of the room which I adored - very comfortable, cosy, grand, clean.

The room in this hotel...

Liked: Location is excellentStaff were very helpful and the best thing about the hotel The hotel was clean and warm
Disliked: The room was exceptionally small it should have been sold as a single room. The bed was a small double and I mean SMALL. The windows were large and draughty despite having a thick blind to cover them . The hot water took an age to come through and the toilet didn’t flush properly. The bathroom door handle came off . There were no drawers to put your clothes but an oversized wardrobe which took up far too much room in a very small area.

Perfect central Birmingham hotel

Liked: Great central location, welcoming bar and a Hotel du Vin restaurant, what more do you need?
Disliked: Parking is terrible, walking up from Snow Hill Station Car Park on a cold, wet, windy night is a nightmare.
