Liked: Great location
Disliked: Paid extra for private bathroom but had no towel to shower, money for nothing. Lack of parking meant extra cost for parking. When you add the extra cost for parking and extra for bathroom, could have probably stayed at a hotel with my own room with bathroom and towel.

Superb

Liked: Friendly check in staff, friendly housekeeping too which is rare, chatty, smiling and even singing.
Disliked: A little bit of rubbish under the bed and some plaster coming away from the wall/skirting (room 110 far bottom bunk).

Exceptional

I enjoyed Perth and coped...

Liked: I liked the history of the building. Location not too bad. Could leave luggage after checkout.
Disliked: I did not like the fact that on booking.com I was given a choice of room size and an en suite shower room. I booked an all female dorm of 6 with bathroom, and paid for that. However when I arrived I was informed that wasn’t available. In addition I emailed the property prior to my visit and asked if I could have a low bunk as I’m 62 and have arthritis. I was told this would be ok. However on arrival it wasn’t possible so I had to struggle up and down a ladder to a top bunk. On arrival it was a male receptionist who was very dismissive when I questioned the lack of bathroom (which I’d paid extra for!) and basically said ‘tough’ about the top bunk. No offer of refund / reimbursement. Attitude was really poor. (The other female receptionists and staff were pleasant) The dorm wasn’t very clean. There were only 3 showers- which weren’t very clean. I believe the hostel was undergoing refurbishment which wasn’t disclosed at time of booking. I didn’t use the kitchen facilities but they seemed ok.

Liked: the bathroom facilities were very good, shower was a good temperature. a good crowd of people staying - felt very safe. lots of social areas to either work or chat with people. has lots of books and sports equipment which you can use at your leisure. it was also cool to stay in a prison - lots of information signs around the hostel telling interesting stories
Disliked: kitchen / dining room smells a bit but when ppl are cooking that's inevitable.

Liked: Can't be in a better position than it is. It's a walking distance to downtown
Disliked: The parking fee, although I'm not sure if it has to do with the complex

Liked: Great location and fun idea (how cool to stay in a former prison!)
Disliked: There were only 5 showers (2 w/m each, 1 shared) and 7 toilets (3 w/m each, 1 shared) in total, with some of the showers without warm water in the morning. Had to queue always. On top of everything, the bathroom facilities were dirty most of the time.Worst were, however, the other guests. I cannot understand how someone could come up with the idea to start playing the guitar at 10pm in the private room section with their door open, or how drunk one must be to yell around the corridor from 2.45am until 3.20am. While individual behavior is largely out of the control of the management, they could at least remind the guests upon check-in to be mindful of other guests and be quiet after 10pm.
