Pleasant - 3.0 out of 5

Yvonne P, Seaton Devon, visiting Plymouth Pavilions Sun, 11 December 2016

Disappointing. Has seen better days; needs refurbishing in the rooms; love the old building but needs some tender loving care!

Liked: The character - lovely old hotel.
Disliked: Hair drier in room unsafe - the vent on the back protecting the fan broken clean in half. The toilet seat, when lifted, was peeling and in a pretty bad state. The mattress had a plastic sheet on it underneath the sheet which immediately made you sweat as soon as you make contact - awful!

Disappointing - 2.0 out of 5

Grace B, Cheltenham, visiting Plymouth Pavilions Sun, 9 February 2014

The hotel in the main areas was lovely; the bar was fantastic; ambience of the hotel was great; staff were very accommodating. The room, however, was very small compared to the photos that had intrigued us to stay at the hotel on the website. The bed sheets had stains on and there were hairs on the pillow case; the bathroom wallpaper was ripped in several areas and there were dirty marks and chipped paint work all over the doors and wood work. There was no room in the car park so had to pay for parking in the morning we had to get up to go and pay the meter at 10am in the morning. Housekeeping walked into our room at 9.10 am. Unfortunately we missed breakfast as we went down at 9.50a.m. to be told breakfast was not being served any more. When we went to check out we were told we had a fee of £8 to pay. We queried this as we had paid with cash for a sandwich and drinks at the bar the night before. The woman at reception told us it was a fee because we had the sandwich sent to the room and therefore this was room service! We explained that we weren't aware of being charged £8 for a £6.50 sandwich to which the staff rudely huffed at us never mind. She didn't look at us again nor did she thank us for staying or say goodbye - we were quite shocked by this and quickly left the hotel. The hotel was in a great location and like I said the main areas are lovely - it was just a shame that our experience here wasn't relaxing or memorable.

Disliked: Room was dated and needed redecorating.

Poor - 1.0 out of 5

A short relaxing break was...

Liked: Staff in bar/lounge and the restaurant cheery and professional
Disliked: I'd booked for 4 nights, meeting friends and going to a show at the Pavilions opposite, and then having a relaxing couple of days to myself after a stressful few weeks. Restaurant did not open for lunch and bar only served sandwiches from noon to 8.45 pm. Pizza available from 5pm to 8.45pm. BUT when I asked for some food at around 8.15 on Saturday evening,, was told that the kitchen was closed as there were " 2 big dinners on tonight". I booked 2 months in advance - surely enough time to ensure they have enough staff to fulfill their own timetables, and just a sandwich after all? The restaurant menu only had 4 choices for main menu, and only liking one of them, I wasn't happy with the prospect of having the same dinner for all 4 nights of my stay. The sample menu on line, ( specific dishes I of course realised would change ), had many more choices for each course, so why advertise a wide and varied menu which in actuality, was not available? I ended up going to another hotel on the same road for my evening meal on my second night. As a solo traveller I had hoped not to have to go out alone at night even if it was just the other end of the road.On leaving, the receptionist was dealing with me and 2 other guests, not giving any of us her full attention. She shouted out the total of my bill, said it had gone through on my card when I confirmed it sounded correct, but at no time did she show me a bill or even offer to give me a receipt. When I had earlier tried to raise issues about the leaky bath, AND a large hole in my bath towel to reception it was clear they weren't bothered, so I gave up and made the decision to come home one day early. Also my room was extremely draughty to the extent of having to put my coat on when drying my hair.

Disappointing - 2.0 out of 5

Kathryn Sun, 15 December 2024

Very mixed 50/50

Liked: Lovely property, lovely spacious room, very clean, nice helpful staff. Breakfast was lovely.
Disliked: Probably because of the age of it, it was quite noisy. We could hear the music from the near by Salumi restaurant, creaky floor boards with people coming and going from the room next to us. The pillows were really hard. The first room we were given had damp on the wall, luckily there was availability for us to be moved. Our bathroom door was very stiff so difficult to close and open. Parking!! Nightmare!! There was nothing in the hotel car park so it cost us £16 to park!!!
