View of the river was...

Liked: This used to be such a great hotel, but something is going sadly amiss. You now have to ‘ask’ to have your room serviced or it will be left completely untouched. Spacious room with fab view of the river but bathroom let down by unattractive plastic shower curtain and deep, wide bath with shower over, which was not easy to negotiate. Toiletries consisted of just a thin piece of soap, small tube of body cream and plastic canister of liquid soap screwed to the wall over the bath/shower. Not even a box of tissues. Dinner is no longer served in the classy Tweed Restaurant on the first floor (only breakfast) but instead in the rather dowdy ‘bistro’ on the ground floor, with its depressingly unimaginative menu. (We ate in St Boswells on the next night). Breakfast on the first morning was fine, although the tinned fruit (grapefruit, mandarin oranges and prunes) on the buffet somewhat boring. However, a small wedding party staying overnight meant that the next day’s breakfast was completely self-service. Quality of cooked items left a lot to be desired and not very appetising. Maybe it should become just a wedding venue: it’s a wonderful location and stunning backdrop for photos. Staff quite lackadaisical and disengaged, possibly because there are too few of them stretched too thinly. Reception often unoccupied due to “helping another guest elsewhere in the hotel”. Unfortunately, a lovely location, great views and even free fly fishing on the hotel’s own stretch of river can’t compensate for disappointing lack of ambience and service.

Great location, friendly staff, however...

Liked: Hotel is in a beautiful location right next to the River Tweed. Room was spacious and the bed was extremely comfortable. There are pleasant lounges to relax in.
Disliked: The decor and furnishings were tired and dated. The website stated toiletries were provided. This was cheap soap attached to the wall and a small bar of soap. There was 1 packet of 2 biscuits for 2 nights. The biggest surprise was that the room was not serviced daily so bathroom was not cleaned, bins not emptied, and room supplies not replenished. Clearly not enough staff to fully service the rooms.

Liked: Heater in my room wasn't working, so my room was a bit cold. Otherwise the hotel was great.

A beautiful setting, hidden away...

Liked: I was there with my two kids for a wedding. The staff were polite and friendly, although, not trying to be critical, think they could have been a little more focused. However this may have been due to age and experience. There were no real concerns or issues and they were always polite and willing to help!
Disliked: We were issued with a fold out “camp bed” for the 3rd member of the family, to go with the 2 single beds. The bed was an absolute disgrace! Not fit for purpose, no matter what age of adult or child was supposed to sleep on it!

A most pleasant stay, I’d...

Liked: The hotel lives up to its description of a tranquil venue in a lovely setting by the River Tweed. We had a spacious room with a decent view and everything we needed. Although the television was tiny, fortunately we don’t watch it when away, but not good for someone who does. The staff were friendly and helpful. Reading some reviews I thought there might be too many dogs in the restaurant-not a place I feel they should be-but we only saw one well behaved dog under its owner’s table. Breakfasts were good but our first evening meal of chicken with haggis was tasteless, fish and chips the second night was much better. Prices were reasonable.
