Disappointed in Paradise

Liked: Desolation Hotel is a incredibly unique venue. Located in the Hope Valley, the landscape is breathtaking and the grounds are gorgeous. The restaurant provides healthy and delicious meals as well as a decent selection of wines and cocktails. Their was also music from 4 to 7 which added a great deal to the overall ambiance.
Disliked: Unfortunately, our cabin had a sewer ventilation problem and we suffered noxious methane fumes for a majority of our overnight stay. As soon as we noticed the issue, we alerted the front desk, but they weren’t overly concerned, nor did they offer us a room change. We informed them the room should not be occupied until the issue was fixed. Near midnight, the smell became so nauseating, we were forced to sleep with the kitchen and bathroom windows opened and it snowed that night. Both my husband and I woke sleep deprived and with headaches. We also couldn’t find a carbon monoxide detector in the room, which made us a little concerned. The next morning, we once again reported the issue to the front desk and we were greeted with a sincere “I’m sorry” but no actual compensation for the inconvenience and unhealthy situation we experienced. We don’t think Desolation Hotel usually operates in this manner and this experience was most likely a fluke, but as paying customers, we definitely did not have a worthwhile stay.

Liked: We stayed in the campground yurts and loved it. The camp hosts have gone above and beyond to make your stay the best. If you are like me, you will notice the little things that don't need to be done but are done. We could not have been happier with the yurt. Everyone at the resort was friendly, and the food was excellent.

Disappointing - 2.0 out of 5

Although the yurts were lively...

Liked: Pleasant staff, comfortable bedding, lovely soap/shampoo etc, loved the bath and fire in the yurt and seeing the stars through the roof skylight.
Disliked: The yurt was crammed into a space either side of which had caravans or RVs so there was very little privacy. It is also very close to the road so in the mornings you can hear road noise and during our stay there were roadworks so what was supposed to be a very relaxing getaway was hampered by the sound of drilling. I appreciate this is no fault of the hotels but they must have been forewarned about it so we would have appreciated them passing this information to the guests. There is also no cooking facility in the yurt or access to a fridge to keep food cool. The breakfast (takeaway only) options were limited which is tricky when you can’t make your own and there’s no restaurants in close proximity. On one day all that was available was overnight oats. For the price of our stay we were disappointed.

Very good

Liked: Cabin rooms walking trails and setting in the woods. Restauarant
Disliked: Too much traffic noise through the night as close to road took something away from the experience of being in Desolation Valley
