Sentimental journey made all the...
Liked: Accessibility. Parking was very close to the hotel. We had a downstairs room. It was perfect for us. We had a lovely welcome from the receptionist and nothing was too much trouble.
Disliked: It suited us very well x

A pleasant, central hotel but...
Liked: The room and location were good..
Disliked: The dinner was tepid and so was the breakfast which had been sitting under lamps for some time. We appreciated the breakfast being taken off the bill.

Will return to Durham but...
Liked: Good location close to city centre
Disliked: So called ‘deluxe double’ bedroom was dark, dirty with very poor hot air heating system in main bedroom area but no heating in bathroom so always cold in there and the towels never dried sufficiently. The bed was very close to the door and you could hear people clearly in the corridor so obviously they could hear us. Our room was next to a fire door which would slam shut at all hours. I dropped my spectacles near the bed and when I searched for them under the bed to my horror a used Durex sachet was under the bed which summed up the lack of attention to detail at this place. The bed was uncomfortable and due to a gap between the head of the mattress and the wall the pillows would slide down and need to be pulled out to regain some form of comfort for your head to rest on. One evening it was raining and I thought the hotel would have umbrellas for their guests like most hotels I’ve stayed in but here you had to pay £2 to ‘rent a brolly’ with the hotel name on and advertise their hotel all over town! When the first umbrella did not come out because it was stuck the lady on reception had no idea what to do so we had to pay a further £2 to get another one. This complaint isn’t about the £4 we had to spend it’s about the fact they expect guests to pay! To top it all we were asked to pay £11 a night for parking on top of the room charge - why can’t they include this in the cost of accommodation to avoid the disappointment when checking in?

Exceptional
Liked: The staff here are wonderful. We were made to feel very welcome when we arrived, and when we needed something it was attended to very quickly and graciously. The location was great.
Disliked: It took a while to work out which light switch controlled which light.

Comfortable rooms with good service...
Liked: Right on the edge of the old city, the hotel is in a great location. My room was large, the bed very comfortable, and the shower excellent. The Nespresso machine was a nice touch in addition to the usual kettle. Really great and friendly staff in the dining room for breakfast, and good porridge, too.
Disliked: I hadn't anticipated the roar of traffic outside (I was in a riverside room) - bear this in mind if you choose a room facing the river, as the more-or-less vehicle-free city centre means everyone surges around the road outside. (It's not loud at night, so it didn't keep me awake even with the window open.)And the hotel is huge and confusing - I got lost several times and met lots of other guests in the same boat. Better signage, please!
