Disappointing - 2.0 out of 5

Faded grandeur with finishes getting...

Liked: The staff are the only good point about this hotel - or at least some of them. The rail by the bath was loose and dangerous and was even worse after it had been “fixed!”The bathroom fan was so noisy it would wake the dead. The shower screen was both dirty at the bottom and inadequate in height with water over the top leading to a flood in the room below.Breakfast at £15 was poor value. Cold food and cold plates at 7.10 am.The Atrium Bar was much better value with great attentive staff and much better value. Our meal in the 1853 restaurant took over 55 mins to serve one course.Room was serviced erratically - bed made one day but not the next, towels replaced one day but not the next etc etc!We spoke to several managers who promised to deal with the issues we raised but we saw no evidence that anything was done. Finally it took the kitchen over 48 hours to remove a room service plate that had been left on the staircase window.

Excellent venue

Liked: We were there for a wedding so spent a lot of time at the property over the weekend. Everything was seamless. Perfect grounds, lovely big suite and a lovely breakfast.
Disliked: There was no mobile phone signal but the good wifi connection made up for this. The room was in the old part of the building and so the temperature was a bit variable. There was heating but no ventilation other than the windows. I can imagine it would get very hot in the summer.

Beautiful location

Liked: The location and building are exceptional. The breakfast was nice with a good selection.
Disliked: We booked a deluxe room. Although the room was small and they cannot do much about that, we thought they could give you some extras in the room i.e snacks, slippers etc. The bed was not very big. The tv was small and tucked away which could not be extended out. Parking was difficult as there was a wedding and event on. It would have been nice to have the opportunity to sit in the lounge and enjoy a pre dinner drink, but these were closed, presumably for the wedding. We were shown the atrium instead.

Superb

Liked: Lovely setting, though expensive to get there by taxi from the station. Long and lovely driveway leading to stunning venue. Massive hotel - long and rather complicated route to my room (I counted 300 paces and 7 changes of direction!). Spa looked lovely but you had to book - this can ba done from your room on the hotel app,.but I did not realise early enough, and it is only open from 8am until 8pm so early swim before breakfast not oissibke. Disappointments were that the plug did not work properly in the bath (shower was lovely), no hot chocolate in the array of available hot drinks in the room, and most importantly, the use able sockets were too far from the bed for me to charge my phone overnight AND read my kindle in bed simultaneously. Room was a little in need of redecoration, which was surprising considering the cost.. Breakfast was lovely - lots on offer - though service was a bit hit and miss.

Public rooms beautiful but bedroom’s...

Liked: The public rooms were exceptional - very comfortable and luxurious.
Disliked: The bedroom was disappointing - a bit shabby. Bathroom was also shabby with chipped tiles and bath. The shower wasn’t clean (in the room and the spa)

Pros and cons

Liked: The grounds were nice, the breakfast was good, and there was plenty of parking onsite. The staff were friendly and helpful. The room was adequate, but lacked some finer details (e.g. no 3 pin plug sockets near the bed). We had to ask for basic items (toilet paper) as these had not been replenished. Unfortunately, the arboretum was closed for a private event on our last day there so we did not get to see it. There were several other private events occurring in the hotel over the weekend we were there (wedding, hen party) so being in common areas felt like a bit of an intrusion at times!
