Reserver Beware

Liked: The room had adequate space/beds and appeared clean.
Disliked: The hotel was booked through Booking, and based on ratings and the final price, we chose Comfort Suites. When I checked in, I was informed that there would be an additional deposit that doubled the amount due, and as long as the room was without any damages, it would be returned. My family wasn't prepared for those additional charges, and I couldn't cancel because we did a same day reservation. Nowhere was it mentioned on the Booking app about a separate deposit required (flat rate or percentage). We have used the app to make reservations for many hotel brands, and we have never had this experience. When we spoke to the hotel receptionist about this, we were informed that it was because the hotel underwent costly renovations, and it was customary. She was told that we had stayed at other hotels that had renovations in the past, and no deposit was required.My advice is to be TRANSPARENT on all important information for potential guests. Sticker shock is the last thing a tired traveler wants to deal with. And I highly doubt that the receptionist, though it is not their fault, would appreciate having to explain this surprise deposit to unhappy guests.
