Disappointing - 2.0 out of 5

Dianne, Garden City, visiting GLC Live at 20 Monroe Sun, 30 April 2017

Much to my dismay the room was dusty and dirty; the floors weren't mopped or swept, with hair all over the bathroom floor; the towels were old and thin, and frayed; the tissue box was empty and not sure the sheets on the bed were even changed prior to our visit; even the two apples were old.

Liked: The location.
Disliked: The housekeeping.

Underwhelming and disappointing to say...

Liked: The room was clean and the location of the hotel is nice. You are in downtown, very close to many restaurants, bars, and things to do. The bartender was very nice and the drinks were good. The bar food was ok, but overpriced for the amount of food you get. I would recommend eating out or ordering food from elsewhere.
Disliked: A few things. First, they are not upfront online about the fact that there is no free parking provided. You will have to pay to park at a nearby parking structure or street parking. Secondly, we booked a room specifically for the large bathtub that was visible in pictures online. We picked our room because it listed "bathtub" as an amenity. We arrived to our room to find an almost standard sized bathtub (it was a handicap accessible room so the tub was a tiny bit larger than your usual tub), not the rather large and luxurious looking one visible in pictures online. I think the large tub is only in a single, king-bed room (which is rather pricey per night), but we booked the "Quadruple two full bed room WITH BATH". There were only two rooms listed "with bath" and we could only see the large bath in pictures so we thought this room would also have a large bath. This was a disappointment as we specifically booked this room (and this hotel) so we could enjoy a romantic evening with a large bath. Literally spent 2 hours calling a bunch of airbnbs and hotels in Grand Rapids for this explicit purpose, so to book this room and the bath be underwhelming (and to pay $48 in unexpected parking fees) was a bad start to our stay. On top of this, the bath we did have was completely missing a stopper, and thus could not hold water. When we asked the front desk about this, they told us to "shove a washcloth in the drain hole". This was an incredibly frustrating response given the context I've provided above, and given the upcharge on the room for the already underwhelming bath situation. For a "high-end hotel" it was absolutely unacceptable to me that they would somewhat dubiously advertise this room for the bath, then tell me to shove a washcloth in the drain in order to even make it hold water.

It served its purpose

Liked: Location and bed
Disliked: Parking $42 for one overnight somehow. I should’ve got a lost ticket and only paid $28…Also pee stain on the wall of the bathroom.Too minimalist in terms of amenities and the lounge was closed.

Beautiful property, but manager is...

Liked: The room was tasteful, clean, and felt high-end. Unfortunately, the room was frigid and cold, and I could not adjust the temperature to get it comfortable. I had to take a hot shower just to fall asleep. I am not traditionally someone that leans on the colder side, but damn, this was the coldest room I have ever stayed in.
Disliked: Booking messed up my reservation, and apparently, I did not have a room reserved with the hotel in spite of a confirmation number and email confirmation. While the manager was willing to check something on the backend and gave me a room to stay in, she was more than accusatory to me as the patron like I intended on this happening. I was told that anytime I make reservations with booking.com, I really should check with the hotel prior to my stay to make sure it really is reserved. What is the intent of booking with a third party if I don't trust the process and have a confirmation number stating the room was indeed reserved. I have never had to do this before my recent stay, so why would I think this time would be any different. Also, in a lobby full of people, I was not about to make a scene. If they had told me that I didn't have a room, I would have just driven home after the concert instead of staying the night. The consensus is that the hotel was lovely and close to the arena for our concert, but the front desk manager was short and accusatory when I wasn't remotely upset or demanding. I can admit if I had made a scene or seemed unruly, but this wasn't that moment. I work in customer service, and it is not my go-to mode to just become unhinged to get my way. The interaction was disappointing and tainted the stay when the accommodations were actually lovely.

Pleasant

Liked: Loved the location.
Disliked: For paying 200 a night. There were no amenities. There was a sticky stain on the night stand when we arrived. The drain was clogged in the bathroom. Our TV in the room barely worked. The half and half cream for the coffee was spoiled.

Exceptional

Liked: I love this hotel. Every room is different. It's very modern. Simple check-in check out. Attached to a covered parking garage for convenience. Parking is pricey. It was $46 to park from 3 pm until 11 am. the next day, so it was not even 24 hours. There are restaurants, shops, bars, Van Andel Arena is super close to this wonderful hotel. All walking distance from hotel. Very clean and safe feeling area. This was my 3rd stay at the hotel and will be staying again in May.
