Totally fabulous

Liked: We visited with Daughter and her American boyfriend, they don’t have much that’s older than a few hundred years, his face when he saw where we were staying, when they saw their rooms, it’s like staying in a museum, everywhere you turn is history. There wasn’t very many staff, we only met 1 and what we presumed was one of the owners, We had breakfast, which was very good, but not the evening meal, it did smell amazing but my Husband is a burger and fries kind of guy, so we walked 5 minutes down to the village, and ate at one of the local pubs. Just a fabulous little village and an amazing stay
Disliked: There wasn’t really anything we didn’t like, other than when we arrived the gate was shut, and we didn’t know how to get in. But once we did

Liked: The castle was definitely authentic and we loved exploring at leisureOrgan was played at dinner which was a lovely touchClean and comfortable bed
Disliked: Separate bathroom, advertised as private bathroom but didnt realise it was over the hall and I we didnt have a dressing gown to wear through nightCheapest toilet paperNo bottled water in roomAlthough staff were friendly unfortunately one members personal hygiene and unkemptness put us off eating breakfast which was a great shame No guided tour available which would have been interesting to know more about the castle history

Great experience staying in a...

Liked: Very restful night's sleep. Comfortable bed, pitch black and silent. Great location you can walk into town. Historical as expected and you can explore some of the rooms. Lovely grounds to walk round and you can pay extra to tour the castle keep where the views from the roof are spectacular . We were given a different room to the one we had booked but it was just as lovely. Whilst there are no tvs in rooms we didn't expect them and it was a bit of a welcome break. However there is a tv room and games room if needed. The only downside was breakfast. Good for meat eaters my partner really enjoyed his but not so great for vegetarians and I imagine even less for a vegan. I'd still without a doubt stay here again though.

NO! So many things were...

Liked: The bed was very comfortable. We stayed in the Clifford room.
Disliked: Billed TWICE for our food and tickets to the keep - 216 pounds! When we checked out I said we were not paying with my card on file, but with my partner's. 2 weeks later my card was charged 216, which I am now disputing. We have the receipt from the machine, but they were unable to provide a receipt via their computer. They said they would email one, which they didn't. I have contacted twice via their contact form and have gotten no reply. Our stay - Our appetizer was delicious!! Garlic mushrooms. The rest of dinner, dessert, and breakfast weren't. My steak was not good. I left 20% of it, fat, on the plate. Chips - no salt on them, nor on the table. Dessert - I had asked for candles to be put on his. I would order sticky toffee pudding if he had ordered something that candles couldn't sit on. We were brought the dessert menu. We'd decided. BUT, then ONE STP was brought out (with the candles, yes), yet we were not asked for our dessert order. STP was very dry. No dessert for me.Our breakfast order - asked for 2 coffees, got coffee and tea. Asked for no tomatoes, but mushrooms with each. He brought one with tomatoes, and when I said we'd ordered mushrooms, he simply handed the plate with tomatoes to my partner. Also, toast had no butter, none on the table. This was only 5 minutes after we had ordered, and he wrote our order down on a notepad, so I fail to understand how 2 things were wrong. We had fun exploring the castle, but I would not recommend it for the amount of money, the errors and quality of food, and now having to dispute a charge. We explored the castle after dinner. The keep was interesting to see. The owner was pleasant when serving us in the dining room. But, all of the other things? It's just too much. I can't, in good conscience, recommend. I wasn't going to give a 1, but the hassle of not getting the promised receipt, no answers to my emails, and then being double charged is just too much.

Fabulous Appleby Castle experience.

Liked: Absolutely everything, our beautiful room, spotlessly clean, the walks around the grounds, the furniture/decor and the all history about the Castle (if only walls could talk!)Food cooked to perfection, fine dining in the hall, lovely staff.. even the creaking floorboards and hearing the wind gently whistling through the window! all added to a very memorable and enjoyable experience for my partner's birthday. We loved every minute of our stay and hopefully get the chance to stop again soon. Thank you, Appleby Castle! x
Disliked: Absolutely nothing at all..
