NOT a two star inn....
Liked: I arrived at America's Best Value Inn Scarborough after two in the afternoon after two meetings and over 200 miles of driving that bright, sunny day. I found the inn to be clean and neat with signs that not too long ago there had been considerable money spent on renovation and refreshing of what seemed a fairly old motel building. I was optimistic that my brief stay would be pleasant and just exactly what I needed. BUT: check-in seemed laborious. The receptionist seemed confused when presented by my reservation document from Booking.com. He fiddled with the computer on the desk, muttering something about "it's not in the system", and "good thing I still have two rooms"....Finally the registration event was completed. I had prepaid through Booking.com and was not really comforted by the receptionist wanting to take an additional imprint on my credit card for "damage deposit". If I felt there was probably a good option for me I would have cancelled right then as I could recall seeing no such requirement on Booking.com nor on the inn's website before booking the room to begin with. I was promised there would be no actual charge made to my card and I hope not.
Disliked: I am a competitive powerlifter and my purpose for staying was to be ready and well rested for a large powerlifting meet held by a large national association on Saturday morning. The ONLY requirement I had of America's Best Value Inn was a good night's sleep as I would be leaving the inn at 7:30 in the morning and would require NO additional services...not even a morning cup of coffee. Initially I was impressed with the overall cleanliness and quite new appearance of everything I saw. The bathroom was clean, clean, clean...kudos to the housekeepers!. The furniture although obviously not NEW, was clean and adequate, the bed attractive when I first entered the room. The large flat screen tv on the wall was fine for what I needed...the local weather report, and I was in bed early by nine o'clock which is when my disillusionment began. Despite what seemed to me a great deal of care in the appearance of the inn and the grounds, someone forgot the primary purpose of a road-side inn is providing rest to the traveler. Despite its attractive appearance when I entered the room, when the coverlet was pulled back and I slipped beneath the clean sheets, I found the mattress was at least ten years beyond its "USE BY" date. The king sized mattress had two great caverns right at the hip position and below. As much as I tried there was no spot on the mattress where I could lay level and no matter what I tried to do, some part of me was going to have to sleep going up-hill or down hill that night. At least I went to bed early and I did sleep until about one in the morning when I awoke, spent two hours up on my computer before trying again for a couple of hours' sleep before the time I knew I would have to leave. Gratefully I drove away from America's Best Value Inn at 7:30.
