Lovely hotel but should’ve been...

Liked: The hotel itself and the grounds are beautiful, staff very friendly.
Disliked: Well.. We booked for a nice relaxing night away, wanting to experience the hotel as a normal customer before enquiring regarding our wedding. When we arrived every path/entrance around the grounds were being resurfaced with tarmac. We sat outside in the garden area for a drink for a little while, it just stunk of tarmac and had numerous workmen on rollers/whackers which meant we could hardly have a conversation when sat next to each other.Ruined new £200 shoes having to walk on freshly laid tarmac everywhere also.. I understand completely the need to renovate, however, If we would’ve been notified about the works going on we would’ve changed the date of our visit, as it did ruin our stay and left a bit of a sour taste in our mouths..
